Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate ammonia gas concentration by the bedding materials during 7 days and consequently, to select applicable bedding material as an enrichment of laboratory animals. Ninty six ICR mice were randomaly allocated into 4 groups according to the housing density sad using filter-cap. Four groups were divided into Group I (3 heads), Group II (5 heads), Group III (3 heads, using filter-cap), Group IV(5 heads, using filter-cap). Six different types of bedding materials, Hard type(GLP : B & K Co., Beta-chip : Northeastern Products Co., Corn cob, Andersons); Soft type(Aspen : B & K Co., Aspen Shaving: DAE HAN Co., Aspen: GYE RYONG) were used: Ammonia concentration was measured at 3 points in the cage : Center, Urine and Filter. While ammonia concentration of Corn cob and Beta-chip reached 10ppm in Urine point. GLP and 3 Aspens reached 20ppm within 4 days. Hard type bedding generally reduced ammonia elevation, but soft type is comfort material for animals. We suggest that the mixed bedding with hard and soft type is applicable for the enrichment of laboratory animals.
